...........zxzxzxzxzxzxzxzxxzxzxz......zzxxzxzxzxx.zxxz...........zxzx....everything that has do to with symbolic expression has for its object the love of some person, whether or not they exist hardly means anything at all and in fact i remember one of the most prolific men of this age freely admitting that his greatest love was not for a real person, rather, it was for a fictional character whose creation had originated in the imagination of another. And what, after all, is the real relation between what we know, our conception of a person, and whatever it is that they truly are? how are our conceptions of real people any more real than our conceptions of their fictional imitations?

Data at 100 Kbps are encoded by
amplitude shift keying on a 15.5 MHz carrier. Power is also
wirelessly transmitted to the implant using a 125 KHz
carrier, and is rectified by the implant to create ±2.5 V

The implant itself is attached to the outside of the eye,
where it receives and processes the power and data. The
implant then sends electrical stimulation current to the
retinal nerve cells via a thin-film microfabricated array of
sputtered iridium oxide film (SIROF) electrodes, which is
surgically inserted into the subretinal space through a flap in

This goal parallels the continuing quest in biotechnology
to construct microbial strains capable of accomplishing
an ever-expanding array of desired biotransformations. These
biotransformations are aimed at products that range from simple
precursor chemicals (Nakamura and Whited 2003; Causey et al.
2004) or complex molecules such as carotenoids (Misawa et al.
1991), to electrons in biofuel cells (Liu et al. 2004) or batteries
(Bond et al. 2002; Bond and Lovley 2003), to even microbes capable
of precipitating heavy metal complexes in bioremediation

The outgrowth of neurons from the pond snail Lymnaea stagnalis and the formation of synapses were controlled by topographical structures processed from a polyester resist. Action potentials were evoked in individual neurons by capacitive stimulators integrated in the chip. They propagated along guided neurites, passed through electrical synapses and triggered postsynaptic excitations that were recorded by field-effect transistors.

We are only who we are asleep in out dreams. Every other context is a compromise, and the names we learn from one day to the next distinguish only illusions. When I presume to know myself, the future disappears in contradiction. If you and I knew what belongs here, and what does not, then there would be nothing that compels us to read any more of it. Between one person and everyone else, there are only reasons and numbers. When you pursue your own interests as far as they take you, no one else will understand you. When you have nothing left to say for yourself, perhaps someone else will speak through you.

solitude is total. only machines are useful. everyone who is of value to others is only a machine.

as far as growing algae as a transportation fuel, if you like the idea, make sure that you can grow your fuel more cheaply than petrochemicals before you get too far beyond the drawing board. The Aquatic Species Program report summarizes a twenty year investigation into the viability of bio-diesel, and becoming familiar with its conclusions should be one of the first tasks of anybody wanting to educate themselves about the potentials of such technologies. There is something elegant to the idea that quite attracted me, personally. It certainly seems a lot more plausible an energy source than the ethanol from corn absurdity. I recall feeling a little disappointed when I read a case study by Dimitrov concerning the Greenfuel company. The case study displays how algal growth constraints, constraints that are founded within thermodynamics of photosynthesis, limit the yields in such a way that the enterprise will not be economically viable.

We looked down at the ground and then into his eyes: "So, the revolution will be complete when the language
is perfect?"........a faint shadow of a smile as he replied: "The secret is to move from translation, to direct thought, to
automatic response. No need for self-discipline. "

hybrid strains showed reduced photosynthetic growth, due to the lack of pyrenoids, the chloroplast sites where CO2 is concentrated for optimal photosynthesis...these results suggest that the Rubisco small subunits contribute significantly to overall Rubisco activity, both by directly affecting catalytic performance and indirectly enhancing efficiency by targeting the enzyme to the algal pyrenoid.

in the mirror of my own compulsion

there's being useful, "said r3j, "and there's being a cog in some assembly line. why is this line even here, i ask myself. if someone else could just as well do this, then why don't i just let them? it means less than nothing to me, I'll just walk away."

"you're not as free as all that" said g9s. "there's the tiny matter of getting yourself something to eat everyday. if you don't queue up for the factory, assume your persona in official registries, you'll find yourself sleeping on the cement and begging for coin change."

he stared off into the horizon, gestured over sphere for the descent, thought to himself:"why is there such limitation to what people can be? what are all these people for?"

I reached over and minimized the screen. picked up the paper that i had in my hands and started copying the figures. scientists were thinking about energy for 7 billion people, talking of a new Manhattan project...a new Apollo program...I wonder, in the abstract, if the species isn't extinct in a thousand years, where will the power be coming from when someone reaches over to flip on the light switch? 1859 first oil well dug

US oil extraction: a 9 million barrel a day peak in 1970...today under 6 million

the total amount of oil prior to any extraction was 2 trillion (2 thousand billion) nearly half of this has been consumed

all of the oil pumped worldwide equals about 25 billion barrels annually

about half of the oil ever discovered comes from the 40 largest fields

the largest oil field in the world is ghawar- 87 billion barrels

the united states has 5% of the worlds population but consumes 25% of the worlds energy

consumption of electricity by americans 1000 watts per capita per annum

138 billion gallons of gasoline consumed annually by vehicles in the United States

the Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007 mandates that 36 billion gallons of the United States' transportation fuel come from renewable sources by 2022

sunlight yields 342 watts per square meter averaged over the entire earth surface

I don't recall where I copied these figures from. That's useful, in a way, because for each of them you should ask yourself whether or not they are correct and how somebody went on about measuring them. there are two major ideas that seem to be accepted by the majority of people professionally employed as scientists. 1) that the introduction of vast quantities of CO2 into the atmosphere has the capacity to effect global temperature. and 2) that the hydrocarbons that we have discovered beneath the surface of the earth are a limited resource

i'd be interested in being able to reference concise discussions that debate these issues. Overall however, the perspective that is going to guide our curiosity is this: perhaps it is possible to harness the power required for running human civilization MORE CHEAPLY...WITH LESS HUMAN EFFORT...than the way that it being done presently. At the limit we have the "can't get something for nothing"and the "can't get out all that you put in" embodied in the laws of thermodynamics. What is interesting is trying to figure out how much we can practically expect to gain.

i spent about eight hours with vaclov smil and his "energy in nature and society" and was rather impressed in the author's faculty for encyclopedic synthesis.

Artistic creation, consequently, cannot be justified as any sort of superior or compensatory activity, and the art of the future will be nothing if not "the radical transformation of situations", an "extremism independent of any cause."
